Osteo-Arthritis (OA) also known as degenerative joint disease, is a gradual breakdown of cartilage in joints. This chronic condition can cause pain and impair movement, especially in the elderly population. Many people consider OA as natural part of aging. It occurs most often in the knees, hips, spine, hands and feet. It may be limited to one joint, but can affect several joints throughout the body. This condition affects more women than men.
The cause of OA is unknown. However, certain risk factors such as excess weight other than age, also appear to contribute to the development of the disease. OA may also be linked to injury, stress on the joints, muscle weakness and heredity.
Willow Bark:
Greek physicians of the first century employed Willow bark known as granddaddy of aspirin and many other arthritis medicines, in order to relieve pain and inflammation of the joints. In 1828 this active ingredient was called Salicin by a German pharmacologist. Ten years later this compound was renamed salicylic acid. In 1899, it was modified and marketed as, aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) by Bayer Company.
Willow bark tea is available in most health food stores. It would require more than 10 cups to equal the pain-relieving power of 2 aspirin tablets. Salcicin or salicylic acid is also available in pill form.
Stinging Nettle:
This can be found almost anywhere in the country. It relieves Arthritis pain by rubbing the juice of the plant on stiff and swollen joints, which is called urtication and it can subside swelling within minutes. Experiments and researches in the department of clinical pharmacology in Frankfurt and the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology in Dusseldorf, have found that stinging nettle has significant anti-inflammatory activity. It is also revealed that this herb does not irritate the digestive system as well.
Another unique sting is Apitherapy, the use of honeybee stings for arthritis and multiple sclerosis.
